How to Blend Paint by Numbers for Smoother, More Professional Results
If your paint-by-number has harsh lines between colors, blending is one of the easiest ways to make it look smoother and more natural.

A simple way to do this is by using two colors at once on the same brush and creating a soft transition where they meet.
What You’ll Need
- Your reference sheet
- The two paint colors you want to blend
- A small brush
- A palette or clean surface
How This Blending Method Works
Start by finding the edge where two colors meet. Your reference sheet helps here, especially if the painting is already complete and you want to touch up a transition later. (contact support@craftoria.com if you misplaced your reference sheet)
Place a small amount of one color on the left side of your palette and the other color on the right.
Dip one side of your brush into the left color and the other side into the right color.
Then, using a side-to-side motion, gently pull a little paint from both sides into the middle. This creates a gradient color that sits between the two original shades.
Try not to flip your brush while doing this.
Once you have that blended middle color, lightly paint along the interface where the two sections meet. Keep the same side of the brush facing its matching color as you paint.
This helps soften the line between the two sections and makes the transition look much more natural.

For Best Results
- Use light coats instead of too much paint at once
- Blend only where the transition looks harsh
- Let it dry before deciding if it needs another pass
- Keep your brush orientation consistent
Why It Works
Instead of leaving a hard edge between two numbered sections, this method creates a color in between them. That makes the painting flow better and gives it a smoother, more polished look.
Final Thought
You do not need to blend your entire painting. Just focusing on a few harsh transitions can make a big difference.
A little blending can take your paint-by-number from looking segmented to looking much more refined.
